Rapper and actor Queen Latifah will build a $14 million housing complex in her native Newark, joining the ranks of Newark-bred celebrities investing in their hometowns. Latifah plans to build 20 three-family townhomes with 60 units and a three-story mixed use building, which has 16 units, on Springfield Avenue and South 17th street, reported NJ.com.

The housing complex is a joint venture between BlueSugar Corporation and GonSosa Development. Latifah is co-president of BlueSugar. The project’s plans include a fitness center and 1,900 square feet of retail space that will be rented to nonprofits, NJ.com reported. The project is set to break ground in the summer.

The townhouses will start at about $1,800 per month to rent, with an expected opening in December 2020, NJ.com reported. The mixed use building will be affordable housing and is expected to open in 2021.

Latifah was born in Newark and grew up in neighboring East Orange. She joins celebrities like former NBA star Shaquille O’Neal, who was also born in Newark, in launching projects for the Brick City. Last year, O’Neal announced he would be building a $79 million, 22-story high-rise in downtown Newark, NJ.com reported.
