Hip-hop and R&B<\/a>\u00a0are the most consumed music genres in the U.S. Hip-hop also captured\u00a071% of the Billboard<\/em> Hot 100\u2019s top 10s in Q3<\/a>this year. There are many more statistical examples tracking rap\u2019s rise over traditional rock. This week, the Maroon 5<\/a> lead singer\u00a0Adam Levine<\/a>, whose career was launched by the softer sides of rock radio, piled onto the genre further.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomething unique to this band is that we have always looked to hip-hop, R&B, all rhythmic forms of music, from back when we were writing our first album to now. Rock music is nowhere, really,\u201d Levine told Variety<\/em><\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t know where it is. If it\u2019s around, no one\u2019s invited me to the party. All of the innovation and the incredible things happening in music are in hip-hop. It\u2019s better than everything else. Hip-hop is weird and avant-garde and flawed and real, and that\u2019s why people love it.\u201d<\/p>\n

It makes sense that Levine would know where the music industry is heading. \u201cGirls Like You,\u201d<\/a> which featured the rap breakout of the year in Cardi B, spent seven weeks at the number one spot on the Hot 100. Levine admits in the interview, he \u201cbegged\u201d the Invasion of Privacy<\/em> rapper to appear on the song and described her role as \u201cvital\u201d to its success.<\/p>\n

This week alone, 50-percent of the Hot 100\u00a0 \u2014\u00a0\u201cSicko Mode<\/a>,\u201d \u201cMo Bamba<\/a>,\u201d \u201cLucid Dreams,\u201d \u201cDrip Too Hard<\/a>,\u201d \u201cZEZE\u201d\u00a0 \u2014\u00a0 is composed of hip-hop songs. None of them sound alike. Travis Scott\u2019s \u201cSicko Mode\u201d featuring Drake and Swae Lee, features three beat switches, three samples,\u00a0and cuts off the biggest artist\u2019s feature at its apex. \u201cLucid Dreams\u201d samples a Sting\u2019s 1993 \u201cShape of My Heart,\u201d while \u201cDrip Too Hard\u201d is a sluggish western inspired trip into the minds of two Atlanta rappers most couldn\u2019t notice if they were sitting next to you.<\/p>\n

So, Levine\u2019s take is hot, but it isn\u2019t scorching. Earlier in the discussion, he also laid bare the current state of rock music \u2014 and had harsh words for the Recording Academy.<\/p>\n
