Wofford<\/a>, Ms. James, 60, the public advocate for New York City, becomes the first woman in New York to be elected as attorney general, the first African-American woman to be elected to statewide office and the first black person to serve as attorney general.<\/p>\n<p>The victory follows a rugged political season that arose after the <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/05\/07\/nyregion\/new-york-attorney-general-eric-schneiderman-abuse.html?module=inline\">surprise resignation<\/a> of former attorney general Eric T. Schneiderman, following charges that he physically abused multiple women. Ms. James will succeed Barbara D. Underwood, <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/05\/22\/nyregion\/barbara-underwood-approved-as-state-attorney-general-first-woman-to-hold-post.html?module=inline\">who was appointed<\/a> by the State Legislature in May to complete Mr. Schneiderman\u2019s term.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Underwood already has dozens of cases pending against Mr. Trump, including an investigation into his charity and lawsuits to stop immigrant families from being separated at the border and to block the rollback of net neutrality and environmental regulations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>In her victory speech in Brooklyn, Ms. James vowed to continue the office\u2019s scrutiny of the president. \u201cHe should know that we here in New York \u2014 and I, in particular \u2014 we are not scared of you,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd as the next attorney general of his home state, I will be shining a bright light into every dark corner of his real estate dealings, and every dealing, demanding truthfulness at every turn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms. James has said she will continue cases such as <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/ag.ny.gov\/press-release\/attorney-general-underwood-and-governor-cuomo-announce-suit-against-purdue-pharma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the lawsuit against Purdue Pharma<\/a>, which the state charges has misled the public about the dangers of OxyContin. She also said she intends to name a public ethics counsel, pursue criminal justice reform and push for the power to bring corruption cases independent of the governor\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. James was leading Mr. Wofford 74.5 percent to 23.5 percent \u2014 by a margin of more than a million votes \u2014 with 43 percent of precincts counted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey may have gotten us tonight, but we\u2019re right on the merits,\u201d Mr. Wofford said in his concession speech, as a television in the corner showed Ms. James at a victory podium.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/09\/13\/nyregion\/letitia-james-attorney-general.html?module=inline\">Ms. James had prevailed<\/a> in a competitive four-person primary, aided by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo\u2019s support. But her victory did not come without some stumbles.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3510\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lovepeacenslander.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/24C75A80-B51D-41BD-AD44-ACB3F0AA02B8.jpeg?resize=596%2C400\" alt=\"\" width=\"596\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lovepeacenslander.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/24C75A80-B51D-41BD-AD44-ACB3F0AA02B8.jpeg?resize=596%2C400&amp;ssl=1 596w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lovepeacenslander.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/24C75A80-B51D-41BD-AD44-ACB3F0AA02B8.jpeg?resize=768%2C515&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lovepeacenslander.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/24C75A80-B51D-41BD-AD44-ACB3F0AA02B8.jpeg?w=1400&amp;ssl=1 1400w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lovepeacenslander.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/24C75A80-B51D-41BD-AD44-ACB3F0AA02B8.jpeg?w=1280 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 596px) 100vw, 596px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mr. Wofford, 49, attacked <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/08\/13\/nyregion\/letitia-james-attorney-general-independence.html?module=inline\">Ms. James\u2019s relationship with Mr. Cuomo<\/a>, questioning whether she would be independent enough from the governor to deal with the string of corruption convictions in Albany, which included two high-ranking associates of Mr. Cuomo\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>All of Ms. James\u2019s Democratic rivals also pounced on her after she said it was \u201ccritically important\u201d that she <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/08\/13\/nyregion\/letitia-james-attorney-general-independence.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fnyregion&amp;action=click&amp;contentCollection=nyregion&amp;region=rank&amp;module=inline&amp;version=highlights&amp;contentPlacement=7&amp;pgtype=sectionfront\">\u201cnot be known as the \u2018Sheriff on Wall Street.\u2019\u201d <\/a>The nickname was given to former attorney general Eliot Spitzer for his use of the Martin Act to prosecute fraud on Wall Street. Ms. James eventually tempered her remarks.<\/p>\n<p>And during a debate last week, Ms. James equivocated when asked a question about the death penalty being applied to the man accused of fatally <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/10\/27\/us\/active-shooter-pittsburgh-synagogue-shooting.html?module=inline\">shooting 11 people in a Pittsburgh synagogue<\/a>. Ms. James said she was against the death penalty but would support its use in the synagogue shooting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI oppose the death penalty, but in situations like this, it\u2019s difficult to oppose the death penalty,\u201d Ms. James said.<\/p>\n<p>Sean Rankin, executive director of the Democratic Attorneys General Association, said the New York attorney general\u2019s office has an outsize role in national matters, often because of issues involving Wall Street.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cOver the last two years, Democratic attorneys general have been the only check and balance on the Trump administration,\u201d Mr. Rankin said. \u201cThey have halted his illegal executive orders and protected rights with injunctions. With Tish James, we will see a very good team get better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms. James is part of a record wave of black women running for higher office across the country, according to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers.
