multi-billion-dollar film franchises<\/a>. The Marvel Cinematic Universe alone has grossed nearly $18 billion globally while turning Lee\u2019s creations\u2014and Lee himself\u2014into household names. The comics\u2019 legend, who pocketed $10 million in Marvel\u2019s $4 billion sale to Disney in 2010 and cameos in almost every Marvel blockbuster, is estimated to be worth between $50 million and $70 million. He is an icon, as revered among comic-book geeks as the fictional crusaders he helped invent. He was also a regular, reliably charismatic fixture of the convention circuit until the aforementioned bout of pneumonia that sidelined him earlier this year.<\/p>\nToday, Lee\u2019s hearing is almost shot, his breathing labored, and his voice frequently fails him. He\u2019d rather be reclining in his comfy chair\u2014gazing out across his swimming pool at the canyon view, reminiscing about times with his beloved late wife Joan. But before I can sit with Lee, Schenck pulls me into the parlor to try and set the tone for the story he and J.C. want to see.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe closest thing I can say is that they [Lee and J.C.] have a Kennedyesque relationship. They yell at each other sometimes, but she is the love of his life, and she has gotten a bad rap because there\u2019s four guys\u2014Max Anderson, Jerry Olivares, Keya Morgan and Brad Herman. All of them have been kicked out, because she is essentially the only one forcing the bad guys away from him,\u201d Schenck tells me. \u201cShe is the avenger; she is the person who protects that man. She would jump across the table and stab someone if someone came after him. That\u2019s the gist of it. He\u2019s not in great shape. You have to speak loud. Don\u2019t ask him about specific finances.\u201d<\/p>\n
Everyone in the room is manic, save for me and Lee. With Schenck frantically stage-managing Lee and his daughter throughout our conversation, it feels as though I\u2019m featuring in one of the many hostage-style videos of Lee that have been leaked to the media by bad actors with worse agendas (one of which featured Lee\u2014being coached by Morgan off-screen\u2014alleging that Schenck was manipulating J.C. and supplying her with drugs). If it weren\u2019t for the narcotics mellowing him, I\u2019d like to believe that Lee would immediately eject himself from his recliner and demand a handler-free conservatorship.<\/p>\n
There are five phones recording video and audio of our chat, and J.C. spends half the interview like a puppet master\u2014inches from her father\u2019s weary visage.<\/p>\n
With that, I\u2019m introduced all around and\u2014with the aid of a voice amplifier\u2014we begin our chat.<\/p>\n
Glad to meet you. Do you miss the change of seasons back in your old stomping grounds of Long Island?<\/b><\/p>\n
STAN LEE:<\/b>\u00a0Not at all.<\/p>\n
You\u2019re a dyed-in-the-wool Angeleno now, aren\u2019t you?<\/b><\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0I\u2019ve been an Angeleno now for 40 years, so I\u2019m pretty used to it. I love it.<\/p>\n
On a personal note, I\u2019m sorry for all the chaos and drama in your life. If you were scripting it, it would be one thing, but\u2014with all these stories, and people coming and going\u2014I\u2019m sorry you\u2019ve had to go through that.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0There really isn\u2019t that much drama. As far as I\u2019m concerned, we have a wonderful life. I\u2019m pretty damn lucky. I love my daughter, I\u2019m hoping that she loves me, and I couldn\u2019t ask for a better life. If only my wife was still with us. I don\u2019t know what this is all about.<\/p>\n
Well, let\u2019s discuss your work. Which superhero adaptations are you most pleased with?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0Spider-Man. [He falters<\/i>] Spider-Man.<\/p>\n
What are your thoughts on the state of the Marvel Cinematic Universe becoming more diverse with Black Panther and Captain Marvel? How do you feel about the fact that your work has been adapted, re-booted to fit the times culturally?<\/b><\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0That\u2019s me, \u201cMr. Reboot.\u201d We have to represent every person, not just white. And so, we have the Black Panther, and the green Hulk. We must represent the green people.<\/p>\n
Can you think of any other superheroes due for a cultural makeover?<\/b><\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0As soon as I find a new color.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m not sure if you\u2019re aware of this or not, but there have been stories out, and at least one upcoming story with allegations of elder abuse on you by your daughter.<\/b><\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0I wish that everyone would be as abusive to me as JC.<\/p>\n
J.C. LEE:<\/b>\u00a0[Interjecting<\/i>] He wishes everyone was so abusive.<\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0She is a wonderful daughter. I like her. We have occasional spats. But I have occasional spats with everyone. I\u2019ll probably have one with you, where I\u2019ll be saying, \u201cI didn\u2019t say that!\u201d But, that\u2019s life.<\/p>\n
Keya Morgan has been going on to me, and other reporters, about how abusive J.C. is to you. I know he was with you up here for a good amount of time. He claims he was with you for ten years.<\/b><\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0No. He was with him for six months\u2014that period of time. And a year or two before.<\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0As Joanie says, he was with me for about six months. I found out that he wasn\u2019t really what I signed on for. So, I let him go.<\/p>\n
Does it surprise you that, now that he\u2019s banished from your life, he\u2019s leveling all these accusations at your daughter?<\/b><\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0I don\u2019t know that he was. But it wouldn\u2019t surprise me, no.<\/p>\n
He called the other day, making all these allegations. He claims he was with you for ten years. He was your protector from all these vultures, which was a word I used in some earlier reporting. He fashioned himself like a knight in shining armor.<\/b><\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0He was Sir Galahad\u2026 He was a guy helping me. I can\u2019t do everything. I thought he\u2019d maybe help J.C. It didn\u2019t work. In fact, he turned out to be quite a disappointment. I think he was wanted by the police, but I\u2019m not sure.<\/p>\n
Didn\u2019t J.C. bring Keya to you in the first place?<\/b><\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0Yes.<\/p>\n
J.C., you introduced Keya to your father, correct?<\/b><\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0I was staying at the Chateau Marmont because my house had mold damage, and\u2014when I was staying there\u2014this guy brought Keya by. That\u2019s how I met him. And then I think Stan had met him beforehand, and I might have re-introduced them. There was a whole group of them, and they just passed the baton from one to another.<\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0In this town, people seem to hang in groups.<\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0To be with the same color\u2014especially if they\u2019ve got a deal going.<\/p>\n
And before that, you had a long relationship with Max Anderson, who, it\u2019s been alleged, has been ripping you off for years. And may well still be doing so with your intellectual property.<\/b><\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0No, not any more. He was doing that for a while.<\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0He still has your property. You don\u2019t know what he\u2019s doing with it.<\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0I mean, there\u2019s nothing I\u2019m doing with him.<\/p>\n
Keya Morgan had videotape rolling on you all the time, and he\u2019s amassed a dossier he\u2019s been disseminating.<\/b><\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0He had video and tape recorders all over the house.<\/p>\n
I have seen a video that Keya made. On it, you\u2019re telling him that Kirk is supplying drugs to J.C., and that, overall, Kirk is a bad influence on J.C.. Had you been influenced into saying these things about your daughter\u2019s attorney? What prompted that?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0Well, I heard that he had been saying things against her. But that doesn\u2019t surprise me, because there is so much of that happening in Hollywood. When you stop working for somebody, you can have an unfriendly misalliance.<\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0Vindictive people.<\/p>\n
On this video, you said that he provided drugs to J.C., and he was a bad influence. Okay, Kirk\u2014have you supplied drugs to J.C.?<\/b><\/p>\n
KIRK SCHENCK:<\/b>\u00a0No.<\/p>\n
Marijuana?<\/b><\/p>\n
SCHENCK:<\/b>\u00a0No.<\/p>\n
Why not?<\/b><\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0That\u2019s what I say. It\u2019s legal now. If I want to, I can drive down the street and buy it.<\/p>\n
Stan, where are you at today in your relationship with Mr. Schenck?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0Daddy, this is what he\u2019s saying: Keya. Bad-ass Keya said terrible things about me, and also about Kirk. And he\u2019s just saying, to set things straight, \u201cDo you really think Kirk is supplying your daughter with drugs and is this bad person?\u201d He\u2019s not. Kirk helps me out.<\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0My daughter has a friendship with Kirk for 30, 40 years.<\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0[Getting annoyed<\/i>] No, a few years! What are you saying\u2014thirty, forty years? I\u2019ve been friends with Kirk for 4 or 5 years.<\/p>\n
We\u2019re talking about Kirk. Keya made a video tape on which you said that Kirk was a bad influence on your daughter J.C., and that he was supplying her with marijuana, which he shouldn\u2019t have. Is this something that you\u2019re unclear about?<\/b><\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0I must have been talking about someone else. People are always talking about people here. Maybe somebody mentioned that to me at the time, but it\u2019s never something I would say.<\/p>\n
J.C., do you ever yell at your dad?<\/b><\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0Unfortunately, I didn\u2019t until the last ten years or so\u2014never before. Having someone not being able to hear, and also having a strong personality that\u2014you know, he\u2019s a strong guy. But, you know, he can\u2019t hear. We\u2019re not alone, and there\u2019s always other people and influences, and I find that, yes, I\u2019ve been raising my voice for several years. And I\u2019ve had these horrible people in my family\u2019s home, telling my parents the worst things: \u201cDo you know what Kirk does? He\u2019s buying them drugs!\u201d Everyone is talking dirt like you\u2019ve never heard. This poor man is worried about his only daughter. He\u2019s sitting up here, and Keya had him so afraid\u2014he was calling 911! It\u2019s all about divide and conquer. Divide, conquer, destroy\u2014and it\u2019s been a horrible situation. And they turn my father so against me that he didn\u2019t know he had a daughter. He thought he had a son named Keya! I was never a child that ever yelled, but I also have to say, I\u2019ve been damn angry. I\u2019ve had Keya, and Max before him, take over this house, where they\u2019re not allowed to talk on the phone with me.\u00a0Scientology<\/i>. Don\u2019t want to mention it, but you better believe, it\u2019s\u00a0right there<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Have you ever laid hands on your parents as has been alleged?<\/b><\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0As long as I\u2019ve lived, I have never touched my mother, my father, or a dog. Never. How that ever happened\u2026 between us, my mother was very ill. She was on major drugs and drink for the pain. And she didn\u2019t make it really easy. And people said things. Nothing was touched. And she was a little off, to say the least. And these people from this cult or whatever, were trying to get everything. Ask me how much they did get.<\/p>\n
SCHENCK:<\/b>\u00a0Okay.<\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0It was a terrible situation. There was never physical violence in this house. Never. I will take anything from anyone, anytime.<\/p>\n
Does your father take care of you financially?<\/b><\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0Absolutely.<\/p>\n
Is there any truth to my earlier reporting about your reported six-figure monthly expenditures?<\/b><\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0Six figures? I\u2019d love it. I\u2019d be out the door and at the beach. No.<\/p>\n
Stan, I was asking your daughter about spending money. Are you okay with the way money is managed in the family? I don\u2019t need specific numbers, I\u2019d just like to know how you feel about this.<\/b><\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0I decided my daughter is no longer a teenager. This money will be left to her, and instead of waiting until I die, I will give her as much as I can for her to enjoy now. And that\u2019s what I\u2019m trying to do. Sometimes we have a few discussions. \u201cDad, can I ever have another few bucks?\u201d And I say, \u201cAre you sure you\u2019ll be left with enough?\u201d But there\u2019s no problem. There\u2019s no problem at all.<\/p>\n
J.C., why do you feel you need full-time legal representation?<\/b><\/p>\n
SCHENCK:<\/b>\u00a0That goes under attorney-client, but I wouldn\u2019t say I am full-time.<\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0I wish quite frankly I never had him. I have been so used and exploited. The only thing that matters is one thing: That is him [Stan] being okay, and happy\u2026 All that mattered was my mother, until she passed. That is all in my life that matters. And these mothers\u2026 [She starts crying<\/i>]… They hate me, and they don\u2019t feel that I deserve it, or that I\u2019ve earned it\u2026<\/p>\n
Who is \u201cthey?\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0We\u2019ve got a few of them. Four of them. But, they\u2019re not going away. When this guy Brad [Brad Herman, Stan\u2019s former business manager] came over\u2014when my mother was very ill again\u2014he snuck in the house. The police were called by Leo\u2019s [neighbor Leonardo DiCaprio] guard, and they got him out. But if he didn\u2019t have that guard, I don\u2019t know if they\u2019d take my father, and I\u2019d never see him again. I\u2019m so glad we have him. They could just take him. I\u2019m so lucky.<\/p>\n
Stan, you\u2019re 95?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

My father made it to 92, then lung cancer got him. And when we were doing home hospice with him\u2014administering morphine and all that\u2014my father had a message for me. Right before the end, he looked at me, and he gave me the international hand signal for jerking off, smiled, pulled the covers over his head, and that was it. And it was beautiful. There was no squabbling over any money. No one was demanding to see a will. Nobody was making any claims. My father was free. In that position, what would you say to J.C.?<\/b><\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0Don\u2019t spend.<\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0I would say, I hope you spend it wisely\u2014because I have lived, and worked all of my life for your mother, your brother [he means his brother Larry] and you.<\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0Dad, I am okay. You have\u00a0made<\/i>\u00a0me okay. You and mother have given me the greatest f-ing life. I am okay.<\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0[He\u2019s fading<\/i>] I couldn\u2019t want a better daughter\u2026 want a better daughter\u2026 a sweeter girl\u2026 a nicer girl\u2026 loving\u2026 sorry about my voice\u2026 and I am\u2014so, I\u2019m only saying, I don\u2019t know that much\u2026 when you asked me\u2026 how I would feel before that\u2026<\/p>\n
Is this where you and Joan used to sit?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
STAN:\u00a0<\/b>Yes. Always. This is where we sat.<\/p>\n

STAN:<\/b>\u00a0Yes, this was our place for 40 years.<\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0Oh yes. And when my mom had this place, it was gorgeous.<\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0So, I don\u2019t understand what this questionnaire is about. I would think there are no two people besides Joanie and me. I mean, she\u2019s my daughter. I\u2019m her father. Sometimes we may disagree about something, but we disagree on things like I did with my wife.<\/p>\n
Do you feel comfortable now in terms of having the right people around you? Short of a conservatorship, are you finally in a place where you feel comfortable with the people around you making decisions for you?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0Absolutely. Starting with this fella I call \u201cHairspray.\u201d [He nods to the inked-up guy named John<\/i>.] He does what\u2014<\/p>\n
J.C.:\u00a0<\/b>\u2014He does everything. He\u2019s a guy Friday, and he really stepped up. We\u2019ve been trying to get him for a year.<\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0I have a lawyer that I am fond of.<\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0You\u2019ve got Kirk who you\u2019re fond of.<\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0That\u2019s right.<\/p>\n
SCHENCK:<\/b>\u00a0Stan\u2014you and I have gotten to know each other a little bit. And I\u2019m J.C.\u2019s friend, and you and I have a good relationship, right?<\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0Right.<\/p>\n
SCHENCK:<\/b>\u00a0And a lot of people have tried to get me out, so that she wouldn\u2019t have anyone to help her with you. So that they could help you. But you and I have talked to you about that, and that was clearly somebody else\u2019s, not your opinion, right?<\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0[Nods<\/i>]<\/p>\n
SCHENCK:<\/b>\u00a0Sorry, that was a leading question, but\u2026<\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0I always said, Kirk and I are very interesting. Because my daddy is Marvel, and his daddy is\u00a0NCIS<\/i>. So, when you get us together, you get some real down-and-dirty imagination. We\u2019re both imaginative.<\/p>\n
Do you feel like your legacy is secure?<\/b><\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0Absolutely.<\/p>\n
What\u2019s on your wish list?<\/b><\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0That I leave everyone happy when I leave.<\/p>\n
J.C.<\/b>: You won\u2019t leave anyone happy.<\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0Well, I don\u2019t mean happy that I left. Happy that I took the right path.<\/p>\n
J.C.:\u00a0<\/b>You always do, pop. It was just the people around you. It was never you. You were always the good guy, and there were just creeps around you, and it was this town. Never you.<\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0I learned later on in life, you need advisors if you\u2019re making any money at all. I did everything myself. The first years of my career when I wrote Super Rabbit [an early cartoon character he created], and when I wrote all those characters, and I wrote the Hulk\u2014I handled everything. I paid all the bills, I did all the bookkeeping, I handled everything. But then, a little money started coming in, and I realized I needed help. And I needed people I could trust. And I had made some big mistakes. And my first bunch of people were people that I shouldn\u2019t have trusted.<\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0And the second, and the third bunch. We are still looking. He is still young enough to still be looking.<\/p>\n
With the mistakes aside, wouldn\u2019t a Mickey Rooney-style conservatorship make sense? Where all the lawyers, all the business people\u2014everyone that ever screwed you\u2014is kept away from you by court order, so that you can enjoy your memories, and enjoy your future?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0They are kept away from him right now.<\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0I leave it to the lawyer and the accountant that I now have.<\/p>\n

STAN:<\/b>\u00a0My daughter. I love her very much. I suspect that she loves me. We get along beautifully. I have regrets, and I suppose she does to.<\/p>\n

STAN:<\/b>\u00a0My regrets are that we don\u2019t see each other as much. [She lives down the street]. So, we\u2019re not together all the time. But she\u2019s great. She\u2019s artistic.<\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0I am.<\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0She\u2019s lovely. She\u2019s ambitious.<\/p>\n
Who does J.C. take after\u2014you, or Joan?<\/b><\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0Maybe a little more after me, because she\u2019s more interested in the way things work in business. But she\u2019s incredibly like her mother.<\/p>\n
And Joan wasn\u2019t interested in all the business stuff?<\/b><\/p>\n
STAN:<\/b>\u00a0Oh, she was. But she was interested in terms of how much jewelry this money could buy.<\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0So, how could you be upset with me? Like mother, like daughter.<\/p>\n
Are you going back out on the road? More signings?<\/b><\/p>\n
J.C.:<\/b>\u00a0Not on the road. But I expect to come up with more projects. I worked on one last night.<\/p>\n
Do you have a message for your fans that will miss you on the road? Do you miss that life? Signing all that memorabilia?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
