Angelina Jolie<\/a>\u00a0is hitting back at ex\u00a0Brad Pitt<\/a>\u00a0after he claimed she made recent court filings over child support in an \u201ceffort to manipulate the media.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

The actress\u2019 lawyer, Samantha Bley DeJean, said in a statement to PEOPLE Jolie\u2019s court filing \u201cwas both legally appropriate and factually accurate in all respects.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat has been filed by Brad\u2019s side today is a blatant attempt to obfuscate the truth and distract from the fact that he has not fully met his legal obligations to support the children,\u201d Bley DeJean said in the statement.<\/b><\/p>\n

Jolie indicated in a court filing Tuesday that Pitt has not been\u00a0paying \u201cmeaningful\u201d child support<\/a>\u00a0during their separation. The actor responded with his own court filing stating he had paid over $1.3 million to provide for the actress and their six children, as well as a\u00a0loan of $8 million<\/a>\u00a0to help her purchase her current home.<\/p>\n

\u201cFollowing the\u00a0incident of September 2016<\/a>, Angelina and the children needed to move from the family home,\u00a0which Brad chose to keep, including all of its contents,<\/i>\u201d she said.<\/b><\/p>\n

Bley DeJean, who filed Jolie\u2019s court papers on Tuesday in the Los Angeles Superior Court, claimed\u00a0the actor was \u201casked to assist in the expense of a new home for Angelina\u201d and their six children but \u201cinstead he loaned Angelina money, for which he is charging her interest on a payment plan.<\/i>\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Maleficent 2<\/i>\u2019s attorney said\u00a0the actress will \u201chonor that loan,\u201d but said, \u201cA loan is not, however, child support and to represent it as such is misleading and inaccurate.<\/i>\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

According to her attorney, Jolie \u201cis asking Brad to pay 50% of the children\u2019s expenses,\u201d but that the actor \u201chas not\u201d paid his share.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cAngelina has had to shoulder the majority of those without his contribution for the past two years,\u201d Bley DeJean said. \u201cChild support is not optional in California.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTypically a father of means would pay these expenses voluntarily without the need for a request or court order. We are hopeful that this can be resolved without further delay or posturing,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n

The Oscar-winning actress said in her filing she intends to seek out \u201cretroactive child support\u201d from her ex. She also asks the court to \u201cbifurcate\u201d their marital status \u2014 a process that would mean they could dissolve the marriage and go back to being single before resolving other issues in the divorce.<\/b><\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Jolie told PEOPLE that the aim the filing \u201cis to provide closure to the marriage<\/a>\u00a0in a way that clears a path toward the next stage of their lives and allows her and Brad to recommit as devoted co-parents to their children.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pitt\u2019s lawyer, Lance Spiegel, slammed the actress\u2019 filing on Wednesday as \u201cunnecessary\u201d and \u201ca thinly-veiled effort to manipulate media coverage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spiegel\u2019s filing affirmed the\u00a0actor \u201cloaned\u201d Jolie<\/a>\u00a0$8 million to help her purchase her current home and has contributed over $1.3 million \u201cin bills for the benefit of [Jolie] and the minor children.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jolie, 43, and Pitt, 53,\u00a0met in 2003<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0wed in 2014<\/a>\u00a0before\u00a0they separated in Sept. 2016<\/a>\u00a0citing\u00a0irreconcilable differences<\/a>. Custody of their six children \u2014 Maddox, 16, Pax, 14, Zahara, 13, Shiloh, 12, and 10-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox \u2014 has been an ongoing issue.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/form>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
