Mary Ann Lisanti (D-Har\u00adford), who is white, issued a public apology Tuesday afternoon, after addressing the executive committee of the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland on Monday night and the House Democratic Caucus on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI deeply apologize .\u2009.\u2009. for my word choice several weeks ago,\u201d Lisanti, 51, said in a statement. \u201cI am sickened that a word that is not in my vocabulary came out of my mouth. It does not represent my belief system, my life\u2019s work or what is my heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lisanti used the slur in front of several colleagues at an Annapolis cigar bar in late January. She told another white lawmaker that when he campaigned in Prince George\u2019s on behalf of a candidate last fall, he was door-knocking in a \u201cn&#8212;&#8211; district,\u201d said Del. Jay Walker (D-Prince George\u2019s), who witnessed the comment and represents the district in question.<\/p>\n<p>Questioned about the incident by The Washington Post early this month, Lisanti said she did not recall using the racial slur at the gathering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">While speaking to Black Caucus leaders Monday night, Lisanti again said she did not recall using the racial slur at the cigar bar, according to Del. Darryl Barnes (D-Prince George\u2019s), who chairs the caucus. Barnes described Lisanti late Monday as contrite during that closed-door session. But Tuesday, he told reporters that her initial apology was \u201cwoefully inadequate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">Barnes said he\u2019d received numerous calls from colleagues and constituents demanding Lisanti\u2019s resignation, removal from her subcommittee chairmanship and censure on the House floor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">Many of Lisanti\u2019s colleagues are struggling to accept her apology, said Del. Charles E. Sydnor (D-Baltimore County), who sits on the executive committee of the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/legislative-black-caucus-of-maryland-statement-on-del-mary-ann-lisanti\/b52c6b03-4332-4763-afcf-9fb5b1a226bb_note.html?questionId=68f2b8d4-dab2-44db-b3fc-6ec344288d2f&amp;utm_term=.1effb207682a\" target=\"_top\">57-member Black Caucus<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">\u201cIt\u2019s a privilege to be down here representing the citizens of the state of Maryland,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen you characterize a segment of your community in that light, it really calls into question the decisions that you are likely to be making.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">\u201cMany folks don\u2019t realize .\u2009.\u2009. the micro- and macro-aggressions and racial epithets we have to hear on a regular basis,\u201d said Del. Jazz M. Lewis (D-Prince George\u2019s). \u201cAnd then to hear from one of our colleagues, who we assume values and respects us, it\u2019s very hurtful. It makes you question. . . . Do you view us all like that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">Harford County, which is northeast of Baltimore County, is about 76\u00a0percent non-Hispanic white and 14\u00a0percent black, according to<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/quickfacts\/harfordcountymaryland\" target=\"_top\">U.S. Census Bureau estimates<\/a><\/strong>.
