The owner soon picked up some fresh leopard tracks nearby and Burrard-Lucas set up camera traps.<\/p>\n<p>After several nights of capturing nothing but hyenas, he was scrolling through images on the last camera when he found he was looking at \u201ca pair of eyes surrounded by inky darkness\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo animal is more elusive,\u201d wrote Burrard-Lucas on his <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.burrard-lucas.com\/2019\/02\/black-leopard-in-africa\/?utm_source=Burrard-Lucas+Photography+Press+Releases&amp;utm_campaign=822b31d334-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_02_07_02_48&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_cf14d48605-822b31d334-18303413&amp;mc_cid=822b31d334&amp;mc_eid=564e919a97\" target=\"_top\">blog<\/a>. \u201c Nobody I knew had ever seen one in the wild and I never thought that I would either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These are the first confirmed images of a panther in Africa in nearly 100 years, said Nicholas Pilford at San Diego Zoo Global in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Burrard-Lucas\u2019s technique of making camera traps that set off high-quality lighting has also managed to catch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2077208-hidden-cameras-snap-namibias-elusive-beasts-at-night\/\" target=\"_top\">elephants, lions and wildebeests<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are few\u00a0photographs\u00a0of black leopards in the wild, as not only are these beautiful beasts rare and shy of human contact, they are very hard to spot. The\u00a0photograph above may be the first\u00a0of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article-topic\/cats\/\" target=\"_top\">the elusive cat<\/a> in the wild in Africa for a century.<\/p>\n<p>Panther is another term for an all-black leopard, and sometimes the leopards\u2019 characteristic \u201crosette\u201d spots can be seen, as here.<\/p>\n<p>Only a small proportion of leopards are black. The ones that are usually live in dense forests in Asia, where their dark colouring helps them blend in as they hunt. Imagine this one emerging from the shadows with its eyes on you.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists were afraid that hunting and shrinkage of habitat had caused the mutation to be eliminated in the wild.
